Daniel Hendler

Daniel Hendler was born in Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1976. He studied theatre with Carlos Aguilera, Roberto Fontana, Roberto Jones and Leo Maslíah, among others.

He founded the Acapara el 522 theatre company, with which he wrote and directed several plays, receiving the Morosoli Award for his work in Uruguayan theatre in 2000.

He has starred in different feature films, including 25 watts, by Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll (Best Actor Award at the Buenos Aires Bafici in 2001), El fondo del mar, by Damián Szifron (Best Actor Award at Lleida Festival in 2004), Sábado, by Juan Villegas, El abrazo partido (Lost Embrace), by Daniel Burman (Silver Shell for Best Actor, Berlinale 2004), and Los paranoicos, by Gabriel Medina (Best Actor Award at the Lima Festival 2009).

His works as a feature film actor were programmed at the Rencontres Cinémas d’Amérique Latine de Toulouse 2004.

He has directed a series of short films, including Cuarto de hora, selected for the Cinemateca Uruguaya’s Espacio Uruguay, and co-directed with Arauco Hernández the short film Perro perdido, winner of a prize at the Clermont Ferrand (2002) and Huesca (2003) festivals.

He taught Performing Arts at the Universidad Católica de Uruguay as part of the Communications degree and has directed workshops organised by the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture.

He recently starred in Jean-Luc Lagarce’s Apenas el fin del mundo, collaborated on the screenplay of Daniel Burman’s El nido vacío (Empty Nest), and co-starred in Cabeça a premio, with Marco Ricca.

In 2009 he made his first feature film as a screenwriter and director, Norberto apenas tarde, the screenplay for which obtained the Fundación Carolina Scholarship and the FONA 2007 Award. The film is currently in post-production and has been selected for Films in Progress at this year’s San Sebastian Festival.
