Synopsis
Charles Wills, a soldier with literary ambitions, meets Helen Ellswirth in Paris on VE Day. They get married and have a daughter, staying on in Paris where Charles writes two novels not however to the publishers? liking; disheartened over his lack of success and tired of Helen's frivolous behaviour, he starts drinking heavily and distance sets in between them. One night, Helen is accidentally locked out of the house and has to walk to her sister's place in the snow, bringing her down with pneumonia.
