Cinema in Motion 7. Awards

Participants at the 7th edition of Cinema in Motion have decided to grant their awards to two films:

THE LAST FRIDAY, director Yahya Alabdallah (Jordan)

Will receive the following:

• 5.000 € in aid towards the post-production in France from the CNC (Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée)
• 15.000 € contribution towards sound mixing work at Mac’Tari in Paris
• 2.500 € to subtitling in French or English from Titra TVS
• A 35mm print without subtitles from Festival International de Films de Fribourg

CONFESSION AND STRUGGLE, director Eliane Raheb (Lebanon)

Will receive the following:

• 5.000 € towards post-production costs by Dubai International Film Festival
• A 35mm print without subtitles from Festival International du Film d’Amiens

Four projects from Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine to participate in Cinema in Motion

Organised with the collaboration of the Amiens and Fribourg International Festivals, Cinema in Motion will enjoy its 7th edition at the 59th San Sebastian Film Festival. The four selected films will be screened on Monday, September 19th.

Cinema in Motion is a space offered by San Sebastian International Film Festival open to feature films at the end of their filming or at the post-production stage, made by filmmakers from the Maghreb, Portuguese-speaking African countries and developing Arab countries: Angola, Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Guinea, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mozambique, Palestine, São Tomé and Príncipe, Syria and Tunisia.

Three of this year’s selected directors have previously participated in the programme: Annemarie Jacir won a prize at Cinema in Motion for her film Milh Hadha al-Bahr (Salt of this Sea, 2008) at the 55th edition of the Festival (2007), while that same year Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas presented their work Je veux voir, later selected for the Cannes Festival’s “Un Certain Regard” section.

Aid anticipated for Cinema in Motion 7 is:

• Mac’Tari mixing studio: €15,000 in sound mixing services.
• Centre National du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC): €5,000 towards the cost of post-production in France.
• Dubai International Film Festival: €5,000 towards post-production costs.
• Festival International du Film d’Amiens: A 35 mm copy without subtitles.
• Festival International de Film de Fribourg: A 35 mm copy without subtitles.
• Titra Film: €2,500 towards French or English subtitling.

CONFESSION AND STRUGGLE
Lebanon
Director: Eliane Raheb
A documentary exploring the tragic events of the Lebanese Civil War from the point of view of two people on different sides: Assaad Shaftari, a member of the Secret Services, a “killing machine” seeking redemption and forgiveness; and Maryam Saiidi, the mother of a young boy who disappeared during the fighting. Eliane Raheb (Lebanon, 1972) has formerly directed two fictional shorts and three documentaries; one of these, Hayda Lubnan (This is Lebanon), landed an award at the Yamagata Film Festival. She is a founding member of the cultural cooperative Beirut DC and artistic director of the “Ayam Beirut al Cinem’iya” Festival.

Jordan
Director: Yahya Alabdallah
Cast: Ali Suliman, Yasmine Almasri, Fadi Areida
The existential crisis of a divorced forty year-old man who needs an operation and has to find the money to pay for it. Yahya Alabdallah (Libya, 1978) is a writer, producer, director and literary critic. He has directed several short films, including: Six Minutes 2004, winner of awards at the Al Jazeera Film Festival, Amman Short Film Festival, Trenton Film Festival and Carthage International Film Festival, and SMS 2008, with which he participated in the Rotterdam Festival, the Tangiers ISFF and the Osian’s Cinefan-IFF.

UNE FUSÉE DANS LE CIEL
France - Lebanon
Directors: Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas
A documentary shining light on a forgotten story in Lebanon’s history: a project by professor of mathematics Manoug Manougian and his university students to launch a rocket into space. This unusual experiment was eventually controlled by the army and received financial contribution from the State. In 1999, Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas (Lebanon, 1969) directed their first feature Autour de la maison rose, followed by A Perfect Day (2006) and Je veux voir (2008), an entrant in the Cannes Festival “Un Certain Regard” section after having participated in the 2007 edition of Cinema in Motion.

WHEN I SAW YOU
Jordan - Palestine
Director: Annemarie Jacir
Cast: Mahmoud Asfa, Ruba Blal, Saleh Bakri
Set in the late 1960s, the film looks at discovery of the world by Tarek, the 12 year-old son of a Palestinian refugee in Jordan. Annemarie Jacir (Palestine, 1974) had previously made the shorts The Satellite Shooters (2001) and Like Twenty Impossibles (2003). Her feature debut, Milh Hadha al-Bahr (Salt of this Sea, 2008), landed a Cinema in Motion award at the 55th edition of San Sebastian International Film Festival. She is a founding member of the Palestinian Filmmakers’ Collective.

Cinema in Motion 7 is now open for registration

This programme, organised by the International Film Festival with the Amiens (France) and Fribourg (Switzerland) international festivals, will exclusively comprise feature films at the end of their filming or at the post-production stage.

Cinema in Motion 7 will take place on Monday, 19 September 2011 at the 59th International Film Festival in San Sebastian.

This rendezvous is open to filmmakers from the Maghreb, Portuguese-speaking African countries and developing Arab countries: Algeria, Angola, Cape Verde, Egypt, Guinea, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mozambique, Palestine, Sao Tome y Principe, Syria and Tunisia.

The directors and/or producers of the selected films will have the chance to defend their projects before professionals from all sectors accredited at the International Film Festival Industry Club.

Different kinds of aid will be granted within the framework of Cinema in Motion 7, among which:

• Mactari mixing auditorium: €15,000 in services.
• CNC (Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée): 5.000 € in aid towards the post-production in France.
• Dubai International Film Festival: €5,000 towards post-production costs.
• Amiens Festival: a 35 mm print without subtitles.
• Fribourg Festival: a 35 mm print without subtitles.
• Titra Film: €2,500 towards subtitling in French or English.
