In his new film, to be presented in the Official Selection at the Venice Festival, the master of animation Hayao Miyazaki brings together the engineer Jiro Horikoshi and the author Tatsuo Hori, who lived during the time of the story of The Wind Rises, to create Jiro, a fictional character at the centre of an epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

BIOGRAPHY

Hayao Miyazaki is hailed as one of the greatest animation moviemakers. In 1963, he started working for Toei Animation, the biggest studio in Japan, and in 1985 he created Studio Ghibli single-handed. His first big success was Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaä, of the valley of the wind, 1984), followed by Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro, 1988), Kurenai no buta (Porco Rosso, 1992), Mononoke-hime (Princess Mononoke, 1997), Sen to Chihiro no kamikakusi (Spirited Away, 2001), for which he won a Golden Bear and an Academy Award, and Gake no ue no Ponyo (Ponyo, 2008), screened the following year in San Sebastian.
