The San Sebastian Festival publishes the report on its 66th edition
Tuesday, February 5th, 2019

The San Sebastian Festival has published the report on its 66th edition, which reflects its rising growth. The Festival broke its own record as far as the number of accredited guests (4,144, 6% more than last year and 47% more than in 2010, the last edition prior to incorporation of the new management team) and takings (907,515 euros, 3.8% more than last year and 31% more than in 2010) are concerned. During the nine days of the last edition, 175,011 spectators, a slightly higher figure than the previous year, attended some of the 628 screenings, at which 194 films were presented.

Regarding professionals, both from the media and from the film industry, the number of accredited guests continued to rise, amounting to 4,144, of whom 1,698 were Industry professionals and 1,053 were journalists from 564 media outlets. The figures also show a rise in the number of its social media followers.

In the section on takings, comprising income from ticket sales, film submissions and the rental of hoarding, the figure came to 907,515 euros.

This growth experienced by the Festival occurs in a changing context for film festivals and the audiovisual industry. Digital immediacy, constant technological innovation and new viewing methods mean that festivals can’t just sit back and watch, simply continuing to screen a selection of good films over a period of a few days. The San Sebastian Festival is already shaping up to become a festival lasting all year round, a strategic commitment based on our belonging to the community at the Tabakalera International Centre For Contemporary Culture where it develops, together with the other institutions housed in the building (the Tabakalera cultural project itself and the Filmoteca Vasca), programmes to train and professionalise filmmakers, such as Ikusmira Berriak and the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, with which it in turn develops the archive programme Zinemaldia 70. All possible stories.

Furthermore, in 2018 the Festival designed and promoted new activities such as Zinemaldia & Technology, with which it aims to join forces in becoming a strategic hub for reflection on technology and the audiovisual industry while creating alliances with R&D&I companies, also reflected in the report.

This document on the 66th edition, which is available in Basque, Spanish and English on the Festival website, also includes the lists of films, underlining those formerly screened in previous Festival programmes (the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, Ikusmira Berriak, Films in Progress or Glocal in Progress), where appropriate, the juries and the awards.

The picture gallery, functioning as an epilogue to the report, looks at the different Festival activities and publics and the important presence of prestigious film stars and filmmakers, who consolidate the Festival as a meeting point for all film industry actors, as a space to enjoy good and varied cinema, to exchange knowledge, opinions and experiences, and to do business.
