In the Mediterranean, the sea around which our civilisation took shape, thousands of refugees wait for Europe to take them in. At the doors of the old continent, they struggle to keep their hope alive despite the precarious conditions under which they survive every day. Varados (Stranded) looks at the everyday life of these long-term refugees. In Athens squats or in refugee camps spread across the country, these men and women still wait for the documents that will allow them to continue with their lives.

BIOGRAPHY

Helena Taberna (Alsasua, Navarra) took her first steps as a filmmaker in the 90s writing, directing and producing numerous short films, both fiction and documentary. She made her feature debut in 2000 with Yoyes, a film about the Basque troubles, followed by Extranjeras (Foreign Women, 2003), on the subject of the phenomenon of immigration, La buena nueva (The Good News, 2008), about historical memory and the civil war, Nagore (2010), which proposes a reflexion on gender violence, and Acantilado (The Cliff, 2016), a film about the world of sects presented in the San Sebastian Festival’s Zinemira section. The Filmoteca Vasca dedicated a retrospective to her in 2018.
