On a remote island off the New England coast, two lighthouse keepers trapped and isolated by an apparently endless storm lock horns in an escalating series of confrontations as tensions materialise between the two and a series of mysterious real or imaginary forces seem to take hold of both of them.
Robert Eggers (Lee, New Hampshire, USA. 1983) began his career as a director and designer of experimental and classic theatre in New York. He later started to direct short films and to work as a designer for film, television, printed material and dance. The Witch (2015), his feature debut as both screenwriter and director, carried off the Best Director award in the U.S. Dramatic category at the Sundance Festival. It also garnered two Independent Spirit awards, for Best First Film and Best First Screenplay. The Lighthouse, his second film, was presented in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the last Cannes Festival, where it received the FIPRESCI Prize.
