ZINEMALDIA STARTUP CHALLENGE is a competition for business projects. A public-private initiative aiming to foster the generation of new entrepreneurial projects based on new technologies and aimed at the audiovisual field, and to support their development in the Basque Country.

Zinemaldia Startup Challenge is the core initiative of the second edition of Zinemaldia & Technology, organised by the San Sebastian Festival, Tecnalia, Tabakalera and Petronor, which has the collaboration of Creative Europe MEDIA and of the applied research centre Vicomtech.

Zinemaldia & Technology is a strategic pledge by the San Sebastian Festival in the endeavour to position itself as a benchmark space for reflecting on technology and the audiovisual Industry.

Zinemaldia Startup Challenge

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

The competition is open to entrepreneurs and recently created startups proposing new business projects incorporating new technologies and aimed at the audiovisual field.


WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR STARTUPS?

Startups must:

  • Have solutions based on the use of new technologies and their application to the audiovisual field.
  • Have been constituted after 31/12/2016 in a European country.
  • Have the intention to develop and set their project in motion in the Basque Country.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTREPRENEURS

Entrepreneurs must:

  • Be older than 18 years on 31/12/2018.
  • Have their legal residence in a European country.
  • Have the intention to develop and set their project in motion in the Basque Country.

HOW CAN I SUBMIT MY PROJECT?
  • Startups can be submitted using the online form available on the Festival website.
  • Each team will also be asked to submit a video (lasting for no longer than 2 minutes) in which the promotion teams present their project. Other annexes providing additional information can also be submitted (presentations, demos, etc.).
  • The projects can be presented individually or as a group in Spanish, Basque or English.

WHAT PRIZES ARE THERE?

The winning business project will receive a cash prize of 10,000 euros. The 5 finalist projects will also receive the following:

  • Access to the Festival activities and events.
  • Accommodation for two nights and travel in economy class for a maximum of two project representatives.  
  • The possibility of free access to an incubation space during the first year of their visit, at one of the BICs belonging to the Basque Technology Park Network.
  • The possibility of access to funding of up to 500,000 euros to develop your project.(*)

(*) Some programmes providing funding support and backing require proof of registered residence in the Basque Autonomous Community and/or of having a registered company address in the Basque Autonomous Community.


DOES IT COST ANYTHING TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ZINEMALDIA STARTUP CHALLENGE?
Participation in the ZINEMALDIA STARTUP CHALLENGE is completely free. The programme does not require you to render part of your project in exchange for its participation.

WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS ARE ELIGIBLE?

The projects must have the purpose to either create a new company or to develop a recently created company.

The proposals can be:

  • Business projects presented by individuals addressing the application of new technologies to one of the links in the value chain of the audiovisual industry.
  • Business projects presented by recently created startups addressing the candidature of new technologies to one of the links in the value chain of the audiovisual industry.

Proposals involving the production of audiovisual content (e.g. proposals for short films, screenplays, documentaries, etc.) will not be accepted.

Projects having received an award at an earlier edition of the competition will not be accepted.


DO I HAVE TO HAVE A PRODUCT OR SERVICE ALREADY DEVELOPED?
No, the product or service doesn’t have to be developed at the present time. However, if it is not developed, you must explain the details of your plan and the skills you have for its future development.

CAN I PARTICIPATE WITH MORE THAN ONE PROJECT?
Each team/startup can present a maximum of three projects and one person can present themselves as a team member in a maximum of three proposals.

IF MY PROJECT IS SELECTED AS A FINALIST, WILL I HAVE TO MOVE TO THE BASQUE COUNTRY TO DEVELOP IT?

It's not obligatory to develop the project in the Basque Country. However, one of the conditions of participation, and one of the criteria used to evaluate the projects, is the motivation, commitment and potential of teams to develop the project within the Basque ecosystem. 

The 5 finalist projects will have the option of access to powerful backup services for developing their projects within the Basque entrepreneurial ecosystem. We would be delighted if this were the case, and would support you with everything you need in the event that you decided to consider this opportunity.


ARE THERE ANY NATIONALITY REQUIREMENTS?
The only requirement is that the people in the team must have their legal residence in one of the European countries and that their legal conditions allow them to participate in the event to present the finalist projects on 22 September 2019 in Donostia-San Sebastian.

HOW DOES THE SELECTION PROCESS FUNCTION?

The process to evaluate and select the winning project is divided into three stages:

  • STAGE 1 – Initial filtering and pre-selection of projects
    The Competition Coordination Team will examine all of the submissions received and those meeting all of the requirements stipulated in the terms & conditions, will be validated for the next stage.
  • STAGE 2 – Evaluation and selection of the finalist projects
    The pre-selected projects will be evaluated by an Expert Committee of professionals from the Basque BIC-Business Innovation Centres, Technalia and Vicomtech, based on the criteria defined in the terms and conditions. The Expert Committee will choose the 5 best candidatures, which will be considered as the finalists and will continue on to the next stage.
  • STAGE 3 - Evaluation and selection of the winning project
    The 5 finalist projects will be evaluated by a JURY at pitching-type sessions and based on the criteria defined in the terms and conditions. The Jury will be made up of professionals of recognised prestige in the audiovisual, technology and business fields.
    The presentations will be made in person and will take place as part of the event Zinemaldia & Technology 2019. The projects can be presented in Spanish, Basque or English.
    The project obtaining the highest evaluation will win the competition.

WHO WILL HAVE ACCESS TO MY DOCUMENTS?
The contents of candidatures presented to the Zinemaldia Startup Challenge competition, and all documents and information of any kind provided will be confidential in nature, and as such will be processed by the bodies promoting the Competition. The participating startups and individuals give their general consent for use of the basic project data by the Competition Team, the Expert Committee and the Jury during the evaluation and selection processes envisaged in these Terms and Conditions.

IF MY PROJECT IS SELECTED AS A FINALIST, MUST I PRESENT IT PERSONALLY IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY?
Yes. The five finalist projects will be evaluated by a JURY made up of professionals of recognised prestige in the audiovisual, technology and business fields at pitching-type sessions. These presentations will be made in person and will take place as part of the event Zinemaldia & Technology on Sunday, 22 September 2019.

WE DON’T LIVE IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY. ARE THE TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION COSTS OF PARTICIPATING IN THE EVENT TO PRESENT THE FINALIST PROJECTS INCLUDED?
Yes. The San Sebastian Festival will cover the cost of accommodation for two nights and of travel for a maximum of two representatives from each finalist promotion/startup team in order that they may participate in the event Zinemaldia & Technology 2019.

HOW IS THE AWARD SHARED OUT?
Each participating team must appoint a representative, who will be the person to complete the form and with whom the Competition Team will exchange official communications. The appointed representative for each project will be the only person responsible for making decisions affecting the promotion/startup team during their participation in the competition. How the award is shared out will be an internal matter to be decided by each participating team.
