The 19th edition of Nest, San Sebastian Festival’s short film competition for film students, opens its call for submissions on June 1. Organised by the San Sebastian Festival and Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture, the purpose of the meeting is to present the works of film school students from all over the world at one of the year’s most important cinematic gatherings. At the 68th edition of the Festival, Nest will run over three days, from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September.

At last year’s edition, fourteen short films competed in Nest, the section to have received 373 works submitted by 186 schools from 46 countries all over the world. From 2018 to 2019 the number of participating schools rose by 34%, while the number of shorts submitted rose by 22%.

Each film school can submit a maximum of three short films made in the 12 months leading up to the Festival dates, from which some fifteen are selected to participate in Nest. Sponsored by Orona Fundazioa and coming with 10,000 euros, the Nest Best Short Film Award will be decided by a jury of students from the participating film schools and presided over by a personality from the world of film – a position held last year by the Argentine filmmaker Martín Rejtman.

Projects can be submitted online from next Monday, June 1. The terms and conditions and other information related to the Nest section can be found on the official Festival and Tabakalera websites. The deadline for receiving short films is July 1.

Nest, part of the legacy of San Sebastian, European Capital of Culture 2016, is one of the San Sebastian Festival’s most important sections within its strategy to promote new talents. With that same objective, the Festival also participates together with the Filmoteca Vasca and Tabakalera in the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE), a school created and funded by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa in 2017.
