Transgressive reflections on the body and identity
Sunday, September 19th, 2021

After winning the Fipresci prize with Raw in 2016, the French director Julia Ducournau won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year with Titane, a disturbing reflection on the concepts of the body and identity. Asked whether a few years ago a film like hers would have had the chance to take part in a festival like the one at Cannes, she acknowledges that ten or fifteen years a film like Titane would have had problems to compete for the Golden Palm, but she’s glad that festivals are now opening up to genre cinema. As for her influences she reveals that rather than any specific directors, she is influenced by those artists like Pasolini or Fellini who show the need to prioritise freedom in their work ahead of any other technical or artistic aspect. She also confesses that it is quite obvious in all her films that she aims to question the archetypes around sexuality, although this is something that comes quite naturally to her rather than being a deliberate attempt on her part to subvert clichés.
