Preserving the legacy of a living legend
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021

James Mockoski knows the ins and outs of Francis Ford Coppola’s filmography really well: since 2002 he’s been in charge of preserving the films at American Zoetrope and of archiving its film library, and he’s also head of its restoration department. He has also organised the purchase of various pre-cinematographic devices in Denmark and organises exhibitions shown at the wineries owned by Coppola.

He’s here at San Sebastián in a dual role. Yesterday as part of the “Conversations” at Tabakalera, he gave a didactic explanation of the working processes in the new presentations of Coppola’s films and chatted with Joxean Fernández, the director of the Basque Film Library about archiving and restoration. On the other hand, on Thursday and Friday restored versions of The Outsiders and The Rain People will be screened in the Klasikoak section. Mockoski has also supervised the restauration of several Coppola classics, as well as films by other directors purchased by American Zoetrope. Over the last fifty years they have collected a lot of material and they have a large library with films and memorabilia, as well as two museums in two wineries eight hours away from Los Angeles.
