Graduate in History at the University of Barcelona, Isabel Coixet Castillo (Barcelona, Spain) presented her second feature film, Cosas que nunca te dije I Things / Never Told You (Made in Spanish, 1996), in the Panorama section of the Berlinale.
In 2000 she founded Miss Wasabi Films. After Mi vida sin mí / My Life Without Me (Made in Spain, 2003), which competed in Berlin, she directed La vida secreta de las palabras / The Secret Life of Words (Made in Spain, 2005), presented in Orizzonti at Venice and winner of 4 Goyas, including Best Film, Director and Original Screenplay. Her films continued with Elegy (2008), which competed in Berlin, Mapa de los sonidos de Tokio / Map of the Sounds of Tokyo (2009), which did the same in Cannes, Ayer no termina nunca / Yesterday Never Ends (Made in Spain, 2013), Learning to Drive (2014), Nadie quiere la noche / Endless Night (2015), a competitor in Berlin, and The Bookshop (Made in Spain, 2017), winner of the Goyas for Best Film, Director and Adapted Screenplay.
In 2019 she premiered Elisa y Marcela / Elisa & Marcela in competition at the Berlinale, and the series Foodie Love. Next came Nieva en Benidorm / It Snows in Benidorm (2020), El techo amarillo / The Yellow Ceiling (Official Selection, out of competition, 2022), Un amor / One Love (2023), which competed in San Sebastián and earned Hovik Keuchkerian the Silver Shell for Best Supporting Performance, and Tre ciotole / Three Goodbyes (2025), premiered in Toronto, and screening this year in Made in Spain.
She served on the San Sebastián Festival’s Official Jury in 2006, the same year she received the Creu de Sant Jordi. In 2018 she was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Paris, and in 2020 she received the Spanish National Cinematography Award.
In 2025, for the first time, she presented a selection of her collages, made over the years, at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and later at the Galería Max Estrella. In September 2026 she will open a new exhibition at the San Telmo Museum.
