Jonathan Romney (London) writes regularly for The Observer, The Financial Times, Sight & Sound and Screen Daily; he is also a Contributing Editor at Film Comment. He was previously the film critic at the Independent on Sunday and the New Statesman, and Film Editor at City Limits magazine. He has also written for publications including the Los Angeles Times, the London Review of Books, Frieze, Modern Painters and Caimán Cuadernos de Cine.
Until 2025, he was visiting tutor at the National Film and Television School, Beaconsfield, and until 2024, was programme advisor on French cinema at the BFI London Film Festival.
His short films as writer-director are Man goes to the doctor and the doctor says… (2001); A Social Call (2002); and L’assenza (2013). He is also co-writer of the feature History’s Future, directed by Fiona Tan, which premiered in the Tiger Competition of the Rotterdam International Film Festival, 2016.
His books are: Celluloid Jukebox: Popular Music and the Movies since the 50s (1995), Short Orders: Film Writing (1997), and Atom Egoyan (2003)
