Ira Sachs (Memphis, Tennessee, USA) first started directing at a local children’s theatre in Memphis while still in high school. In 1988, he graduated with a degree in film history and literary theory from Yale University, and then moved to NYC. He soon became an active member of the blossoming independent film community and, significantly, joined ACT UP, a non-violent activist group that fought against government inaction during the worst years of the AIDS epidemic.
His feature films include The Delta (1996), Forty Shades of Blue (2005); Keep the Lights On (2012); Love Is Strange (Sundance, Berlin-Panorama, Perlak, 2014); Little Men (Sundance, Berlin-Generation Kplus, Perlak, 2016); Frankie (2019), Passages (2023), and Peter Hujar’s Day (2025). His latest feature, The Man I Love (Perlak), premiered this year in Competition at Cannes and went on to Telluride, Toronto, and, in October, the New York Film Festival.
A Guggenheim, Rockefeller, MacDowell, and Yaddo Fellow, Sachs is also the Founding Director of Queer|Art, an arts organization built to support mentorship and inter-generational exchange among queer and trans artists in film, performance, literature and visual arts.
