Genki Kawamura (Yokohama, Japón) published In 2012 his first novel, If Cats Disappeared from the World. The book has been translated into 35 languages and has sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide. His subsequent works include One Hundred Flowers and The Horse and I, both of which have been translated and published internationally.
Alongside his writing career, Kawamura produced numerous films including, Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi no n awa / Your name (Official Selection, Special Screenings, 2016) and Suzume no Tojimari / Suzume (2022), and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Kaibutsu / Monster (Perlak, 2023).
In 2018, Kawamura made his directorial debut with Duality, selected for the short film competition at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2022 he received the Silver Shell for best director at the San Sebastián Film Festival for his first feature film, Hyakka / A Hundred Flowers (2022), adapted from his novel. His second feature film, 8-ban deguchi / Exit 8 (2025), was screened as Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival (Midnight Screenings). The film was released in more than 100 countries and territories.
