A graduate of the ECAM, Ion de Sosa (San Sebastián) premiered his debut, True Love (2010), at the Punto de Vista Festival. The film later won Best Film at the first edition of the Márgenes festival.
The second, Sueñan los androides (2015), premiered in the Forum section of the Berlinale. His latest, Balearic (2025), had its world premiere at the Locarno Festival, competed in the Official Selection at Sitges and landed a Goya nomination for Best New Director.
In 2023, he premiered his medium-length film, the Goya for Best Short Fiction-nominated Mamántula in Zabaltegi-Tabakalera. At the Festival, he has also presented the short films Leyenda dorada (Zabaltegi-Tabakalera, Kimuak, 2019), co-directed with Chema García Ibarra, and Mater (Eusko Label, 2025).
As a director of photography he has worked on feature films including Espíritu sagrado (Chema García Ibarra, 2021), La parra (Alberto Gracia, 2024), Ariel (Lois Patiño, 2025) and Aro berria (Irati Gorostidi, 2025), recipient of a Special Mention from the Kutxabank-New Directors Award in San Sebastián.
He has also participated in some of these works as a producer, together with Leire Apellaniz, through their joint company, Apellaniz and De Sosa.
His films have travelled to festivals, museums and cultural spaces including the BAFICI, Locarno, Rotterdam, BFI, Viennale, Lincoln Center and Museo Reina Sofía.
