Catarina Vasconcelos (Lisbon) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, completed a postgraduate course in Visual Anthropology at ISCTE-IUL, and obtained an MA at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2014, her graduation film, Metáfora ou a Tristeza Virada do Avesso, premiered at Cinéma du Réel in Paris, where it received the Best International Short Film Award.
In 2020, her first feature, A metamorfose dos pássaros / The Metamorphosis of Birds, premiered in the Encounters section of the Berlinale, receiving the FIPRESCI Award, and was subsequently awarded at festivals including San Sebastián, where it won the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera Award, New Horizons, Vilnius, Pesaro, and IndieLisboa, amongst others. In 2021, the film was selected as Portugal’s candidate for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. In 2022, it received the Sophia Awards for Best Director and Best Documentary Feature.
In 2023, her short film, Nocturno para uma floresta premiered at Locarno’s Pardi di Domani and was subsequently selected for festivals including the New York Film Festival, IndieLisboa, Viennale, Zinebi, and Hong Kong Fim Festival. She is currently working on her next feature film, Unfinished Painting.
