With Artakalan, Yeşim Ustaoğlu returns to the San Sebastián Festival with a deeply personal story about what happens when the life we have built no longer feels our own. In the Official Selection, the Turkish filmmaker follows Elif, a poet who has lost her creative impulse and finds herself increasingly trapped by the expectations surrounding her. Her response is to leave behind the familiar and embark on a journey that becomes much more than a change of scenery. As she confronts questions of identity, family, memory and belonging, the journey forces her to look again at the foundations of her life and at what might still be recovered. What begins as a search for herself gradually becomes an encounter with the people, places and memories that have shaped her. Starring Öykü Karayel and Metin Akdülger, Artakalan marks another chapter in Ustaoğlu’s relationship with San Sebastián, where Pandora’s Box won the Golden Shell in 2008. For audiences looking for cinema that takes its time and leaves room for reflection, Artakalan is an invitation to travel with its protagonist, away from certainties, towards the roots of who we are. A thoughtful, intimate film to discover on the big screen and discuss afterwards.
