In El mal padre, Roberto Bueso explores the wounds, fears and unspoken truths that shape family bonds. Santi Balmes (Eduard Fernández), a celebrated writer and academic facing death, brings his three children together for Christmas in the weathered family home. Their reunion forces them to confront an absent father and a childhood marked by distance. Blending sorrow with biting humour, Bueso refuses to paint Santi as either as a villain or a martyr. Instead, he explores the complex space where bitterness and love intertwine. For Alberto (Adam Jezierski), on the verge of fatherhood, the encounter takes on a new meaning: can he
escape the legacy of his upbringing? Through wordless pauses, sharp exchanges and tenderness, El mal padre asks wonders if understanding our parents can truly explain their shortcomings and offer us a path to healing.
