In Azken agurra (The Last Goodbye), Koldo Almandoz transforms death into the unlikely spark for a bittersweet, gently humorous glimpse into everyday existence. Tomás Martínez runs a company that arranges secular funerals, but his own life is anything but settled: mounting debts, a revoked driving licence, tangled ties with his daughter and a surprising pull toward a much younger intern force him to navigate a cascade of unexpected second chances.
Starring Iñigo Azpitarte and Izaro Nieto, the film drifts gracefully between melancholy, tenderness and sly dark humour. Against the backdrop of Donostia and shot in Basque, Almandoz crafts a close-knit world where death and life walk side by side and even failure can open the door to something new.
