“Survivors of the Andes plane crash have been found.” With that radio announcement, one of the most astonishing survival stories of our time seemed to come to an end. Yet for those who made it home, a new and unexpected chapter was just unfolding. Beyond Society, directed by Carlos Torres and featured in the Official Selection as a special out-ofcompetition screening, explores what happened after the rescue. Created by Juan Antonio Bayona and Torres, the three-part documentary reunites survivors with relatives of those lost in the 1972 crash, revisiting memories, grief and decades of silence.
Archive footage, testimonies and scenes from Society of the Snow reveal a story that goes beyond the mountain. Remarkably, the documentary was born from an emotional reunion at a screening of the film, when survivors and victims’ relatives met and embraced for the first time in decades. Because surviving was just the beginning.
