Ira Sachs takes us to late1980s New York in The Man I Love, a raw and intimate tale set during the darkest years of the AIDS crisis. Rami Malek embodies Jimmy, a magnetic underground performer whose world pulses with art, desire, and the awareness that every moment counts. Yet Sachs shines a light on the passions that make life irresistible: love, friendship, sex, creativity, and the pursuit of freedom.
Inspired by his own memories of New York and its vibrant activist circles, the filmmaker conjures a world where fear and loss are woven together with bursts of joy, closeness, and a fierce sense of unity. When Jimmy meets Vincent, their connection sparks a relationship that fills the uncertain days ahead with hope and tenderness.
