Nicole Garcia’s 7h40 ce matin-là / Milo returns Marion Cotillard to San Sebastián, this time as Alice, a woman whose revolutionary fervour has left deep scars. After two decades behind bars for her beliefs, Alice’s greatest sacrifice was not her freedom, but her son: terrified he would be lost to the foster system, she gave him up for adoption. Years later, burdened by secrets and guilt, yet clinging to hope, she seeks out the son she never knew.
Inspired by the radical spirit of May 1968, Garcia explores the fraught intersection of political passion and motherhood, questioning what endures when ideals define a lifetime. The film marks a reunion for Garcia and Cotillard a decade after Mal de Pierres, with Cotillard crediting Garcia as the main reason she accepted the role.
At the press conference, Cotillard defended the irreplaceable human dimension of acting, joking that AI actors currently “play like potatoes” and arguing that no artificial creation can yet reproduce the lived experience, wounds and beating heart behind a performance.
