Cristian Mungiu brings Fjord, his second Palme d’Or winner and first film in English, to our Perlak section. Set in a remote Norwegian fjord, it follows a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple whose family life unravels when bruises on their teenage daughter question their traditional upbringing. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve play parents torn between clashing visions of family and social duty.
After a decade of research, Mungiu avoids taking sides, exploring what happens when people believe their values are the only legitimate ones. He urges audiences to confront uncomfortable perspectives, arguing cinema should spark doubt and dialogue rather than simply echoing what we already believe.
The film’s striking landscape becomes part of that tension. The mountains surrounding the community suggest both beauty and confinement, while the threat of avalanches mirrors the fragile balance beneath its seemingly peaceful surface. As Mungiu notes, unsolved conflicts can eventually shake the ground beneath us. With Fjord, the director turns a family drama into a broader exploration of how societies negotiate difference, inviting viewers to exercise their own judgement.
