The film Ander eta Yul (Ana Díez, 1988) has been restored by the Filmoteca Vasca and EITB at the L’immagine Ritrovata laboratories, an initiative of the Cineteca di Bologna (Italy). This outstanding work of Basque cinema will show as a 4K screening in September as part of the Klasikoak section at the San Sebastián Festival, the event at which the film had its premiere 38 years ago, specifically in Zabaltegi-New Directors.
The restoration was presented today in Tabakalera, at an event attended by its director Ana Díez; the Deputy Minister of Culture with the Basque Government, Andoni Iturbe; the Director of the Basque Language and Culture at EITB, Vanesa Fernández; the Director of the San Sebastián Festival, José Luis Rebordinos, and the Director of the Filmoteca Vasca, Joxean Fernández.

The original negative, kept at the Filmoteca Española, was taken to Bologna at the end of September 2025. The laboratories set about studying its condition and repairing it by hand, using ultrasound for the cleaning process. Once scanned, it was digitally restored, stabilising the image, and removing scratches and dirt. Finally, the colour correction and sound restoration procedures were completed, both of which were supervised early this year in the Italian city by Ana Díez and the film’s director of photography, Gonzalo Fernández Berridi. In addition to these works, the entire process was overseen by the director herself and by technical staff from the Filmoteca Vasca.
This same restored copy will participate in the Budapest Classics Film Marathon, to take place in the Hungarian capital from 15-20 September, and organised by the National Film Institute Hungary, and in Berlin's Film Restored - The Film Heritage Festival (October), sponsored by the German Cinematheque. Ana Díez will present the film in both festivals. The Filmoteca Vasca will endeavour to ensure that Ander eta Yul is also screened at other leading events focused on classic movies.
Financing for the project was provided by EITB and the Filmoteca Vasca under the auspices of the Basque Government.

Furthermore, in the framework of the San Sebastián Festival, the Filmoteca Vasca will give its award to Ana Díez, in recognition of her career. This accolade, honouring key figures in the world of Basque film, has previously gone to directors such as Pedro Olea, Montxo Armendáriz, Anjel Lertxundi, Xabier Elorriaga, Alfonso Ungría and José Julián Bakedano.
Ander comes home after years in jail for drug dealing. There he finds a family that no longer exists, everything has changed. He runs into Yul, an old friend from his seminary days.
