Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Youth, cinema, memory and democracy section of the San Sebastian Festival is hosting three activities around Rocío (1980), the documentary by Fernando Ruiz Vergara that was censored during the Spanish Transition. The programme Rocío, una película maldita is organised by the Commissioner for the Holding of the 50th Anniversary of Spain in Freedom and comprises a screening of the uncut version of Rocío, a documentary about Ruiz Vergara’s unfinished work, and a live show of the podcast De eso no se habla.
Filmed between 1976 and 1978, Rocío is a documentary about the pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady of Rocío. It includes testimonials about repression under the Franco regime in Almonte (Huelva) and identifies José María Reales Carrasco as responsible for around a hundred murders (99 men and one woman) during the repression of the Civil War in the region.
The film was legally censored shortly after its release, forcing its director into exile in Portugal and effectively cutting short his career. More than four decades later, its uncut screening in San Sebastián, tomorrow, Wednesday, at 19:15 at Trueba 1, represents an exercise in cinematic reparation that the Commissioner and the Festival began last year with the homage to Basilio Martín Patino’s Canciones para después de una guerra / Songs for After a War, which was also censored at the time.
The Tabakalera Film and Audiovisual Laboratory will also host Jornaleros. Cara A: Rocío tomorrow at 17:00, a live recording of the podcast De eso no se habla, directed and hosted by journalist Isabel Cadenas Cañón, who received an Ondas Award for this work.
Finally, on Thursday 24 September at 16:00, the documentary Caja de resistencia will be screened at Trueba 1. Directed by Alejandro Alvarado and Concha Barquero, the film, as an act of dissent, imagines the projects that Fernando Ruiz Vergara left unfinished following the legal censorship of Rocío.
