In this film, Giovanni tells the tale of a falsely accused man, Simon Risler (Claude Brasseur), who escapes police custody after being tried and sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit. He hides at the home of his defence lawyer (Annie Girardot), with whom he sets about proving his innocence and uncovering a corrupt plot involving high-ranking officers in the Financial Brigade of the French police force.
