In his posthumous film, Jacques Becker adapted the novel by Giovanni in which he narrated his attempted escape from La Santé prison. The writer ended up actively participating in the screenplay and providing all of the elements making for extreme realism. The four protagonists share a cell. When they are about to make their flight, they are assigned a fifth and subversive prisoner in the same, small space.
