18th-century Spanish America. Deep in the tropical jungle near the Iguazú Falls, Jesuit missionary Father Gabriel follows in the footsteps of a fellow Jesuit who was crucified after winning over the local community with nothing but his faith and an oboe. Welcomed by the Guaraní people, Gabriel establishes the San Carlos mission.
