Cooking has never been a neutral gesture. We head for the cooker when we're hungry, but not only to satisfy our appetite: there's always something else behind the excercise. When we think of a recipe, we do it from a certain place, adding what we are, what we've been taught, and when we make it, we do it with respect for a series of rituals that we've seen repeated over the years.
