Werner Herzog was presented with the Donostia Award in a ceremony celebrating both the filmmaker and his extraordinary vision of cinema. Orlando Bloom introduced Herzog as a lifelong champion of the art form, recalling their collaboration and Herzog’s fascination with nature’s wildest edges, the line between reality and imagination, and the restless spirit that turns filmmaking into a quest for discovery.
A montage of Herzog’s iconic films—from Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Heart of Glass to Nosferatu, Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and his latest, Bucking Fastard—set the stage for a thunderous standing ovation.
Taking the stage, Herzog declared: “I’m here standing in front of you, not as a foreigner.” He recalled his enduring connection with the Basque people, dating back to Aguirre,and praised the Basque language, which he described as the precedent of all other languages in Europe.
“I feel a community, as if I belonged here,” he said. “It’s a country of poets. And I receive this here from the poets.” Herzog was embraced not just for his achievements, but as a filmmaker who has always approached cinema as a voyage into the unknown.
