At 84, Werner Herzog seems in no mood to look back. Presenting Bucking Fastard in San Sebastián, where he receives the Donostia Award for his career, the German filmmaker said he will be back at work on Monday, just three days away from finishing his next film, faithful to a filmmaking approach that leaves room for the unexpected. Herzog praised Rooney and Kate Mara, who carry the film on their shoulders, and Orlando Bloom, whom he believes has entered new terrain as an actor and that “time is on his side.” Bloom highlighted the sensitivity of his character, a man who quickly finds himself out of his depth.For Herzog, a film cannot be completely planned: if the screenplay is translated too pedantically, it arrives “dead on arrival.” He also stressed the need to defend ourselves against algorithms, and said he only wants to look at his
list of recipients: great actors and filmmakers.
