Nine years after Loveless, Andrey Zvyagintsev makes a powerful return to the screen with Minotaur, which opens Perlak following his Grand Prix triumph at Cannes. Inspired by Claude Chabrol’s The Unfaithful Wife, the film transplants the tale to Russia in 2022, where a marriage unravels amid the shadow of war in Ukraine and the urgent call for men to join the front lines.
Gleb, a prosperous businessman, faces pressure to send his employees to the army just as his wife embarks on a passionate affair with a young photographer. As his world crumbles both
at work and at home, his decisions lay bare a deeper moral decay. Filmed in Latvia with a mostly exiled Russian cast and crew, Minotaur also signals Zvyagintsev’s creative resurgence after a near-fatal illness and his relocation to France.
The director avoids showing the war directly, preferring gestures and details that reveal its presence. He has described the film as antiwar rather than political, insisting that he does not want to make propaganda.
France has now selected Minotaur as its submission for the 2027 International Feature Oscar.
