Fred Cavayé unveils his new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables in the Official Selection, bringing a fresh, modern cinematic style to the 19th-century classic. Described at the press conference as a thrilling blend of suspense, historical drama and literary epic, the film explores aspects of Hugo’s novel rarely seen on screen. Cavayé drew on both the original text and Hugo’s biography, particularly his opposition to the death penalty and defence of social justice. Rather than repeat previous adaptations, he focused on the characters’ biographies, notably Inspector Javert, whose experience of abandonment helps explain his obsession with order and the law.
The cast, including Vincent Lindon, Noémie Merlant, Camille Cottin, Tahar Rahim and Benjamin Lavernhe, brings new depth to these iconic figures. For Cavayé, the film’s message remains strikingly relevant: amid inequality and hardship, empathy, solidarity and compassion are still essential.
