Leah Nelson’s debut, Tangles, arrives in Perlak after its Cannes premiere, turning Sarah Leavitt’s graphic memoir about Alzheimer’s into a hand-drawn animated feature that is as tender as it is unsentimental. Sarah, an artist and activist in 1990s San Francisco, returns to her conservative hometown when her mother’s illness begins to erase the woman she knows. Nelson avoids easy melodrama, finding humour in family tensions and the absurdities of caregiving, while the black-and-white drawings give shape to memory, confusion and loss. With voices including Abbi Jacobson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston, Tangles makes a very personal story feel intimate and universal.
