Benjamín Naishtat’s Glaxo, in San Sebastián’s Official Selection, explores how the past survives in people and collective memory. Set in Chivilcoy across several decades, it follows four friends whose bond is shattered by the arrival of a sinister former police commissioner and his seductive wife, played by Lali Espósito. Years later, guilt, violence and revenge resurface.
Inspired by an Argentine novel and drawing on film noir and melodrama, the film reflects on Argentina’s history of repression and violence. Originally planned for Chivilcoy, it was shot in southern Brazil due to production difficulties. As producer Rodrigo Teixeira put it, “It’s an Argentine film shot in Brazil.”
For Naishtat, cinema should provoke questions rather than deliver a message. At its heart, Glaxo asks whether the wounds of the past can ever truly be forgiven.
