Amanda Kernell brings Sámi culture to the Official Selection with Brace Your Heart, a deeply personal story of love, trauma and forgiveness. Ejva, a young reindeer herder, inherits her father’s herd and struggles to preserve both her livelihood and her place in a close-knit community. When love, jealousy and violence upend her life, she must find a way to heal without abandoning who she is.
Kernell, whose father’s family is Sámi reindeer herders, calls the film a “healing” work and a declaration of love for this way of life. Rather than turning Sámi culture into a postcard, she wanted everything to feel real, filming with people who know reindeer herding firsthand. At its core, Brace Your Heart asks whether forgiveness can be a path to freedom.
