“Am I one of you?” In La bola negra, Los Javis turn this terrified cry into the pulse of a film about war, desire and the need to belong. Moving between 1932, 1937 and 2017, the film follows men whose lives are marked by Spain’s Civil War and by Federico García Lorca, whose unfinished play becomes a thread connecting generations. Inspired by Alberto Conejero’s La piedra oscura, the film imagines what might have remained of Lorca’s unfinished La bola negra. Yet this is no biopic: Lorca becomes a poetic presence, a voice for what history silenced. From fascist repression to the loneliness of Grindr, Los Javis build a story about desire denied and life reclaimed. A film about war, certainly—but above all, as its directors insist, a film about love, and the courage to want to live.
