Nanni Moretti delves into the tangled threads of love, longing and missed chances in Succederà questa notte, a gentle yet bittersweet story unveiled in Perlak. Loosely inspired by Eshkol Nevo’s tales, it follows Matteo and Greta, whose first encounter is unforgettable: she steps onto a tennis court in a wedding dress. Years later,their paths cross again,offering a possible second chance.
Louis Garrel describes Matteo as “a 45-year-old teenager”, driven to make up for what he missed. For Jasmine Trinca, their love needs no explanation: “It simply happens.” Romance, irony, and melancholy weave together in Moretti’s portrait of love’s contradictions. San Sebastián pulses through the narrative, especially during a pivotal moment at Bruce Springsteen’s 2025 Anoeta concert, where the protagonists vanish into the sea of voices belting out ‘Hungry Heart’.
For Garrel, cinema mirrors the familiar emotions of love:disappointment, longing, restlessness and hope. Here, Moretti invites us to recognise ourselves in them, and to believe, if only for a moment, in second chances.
