Basque Country, 1609. The men of the region are at sea. Ana joins other girls from the village to dance in the woods. Judge Rostegui, given the task of purifying the region by the King, arrests the women and accuses them of witchcraft. He decides to do what it takes to make them confess what they know about the akelarre, a ceremony with magical connotations during which the Devil is said to initiate his servants and mate with them. Winning project of the Arte Kino International Prize at the VI Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum in 2017.
Pablo Agüero (Mendoza, Argentina. 1977) started in cinema shooting a number of short films which won awards at different international festivals. In 2008 he directed his first full-length film, Salamandra, which participated in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes. The second, 77 Doronship (2009), was honoured with the Best Director award at Buenos Aires Festival and participated in Zabaltegi - New Directors in San Sebastian. With the documentary Madres de los dioses (2015), he received a special mention at Mar del Plata International Festival. That same year he competed in San Sebastian Festival’s Official Selection with Eva no duerme (Eva Doesn’t Sleep). In 2018 he directed Son of a Man, completely filmed with drones in the Amazon. Akelarre was the winning project of the Arte Kino International Prize at the VI Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum in 2017.
