IL CAPPOTTO / THE OVERCOAT
Hunger, Humour and Fantasy

Town clerk Carmine de Carmine's new coat has a devastating effect on his character, bringing him out of his shell and giving him the courage to attend a party at the secretary-general's house where he even dances with Caterina, the mayor's mistress. When his coat is stolen on his way out of the gathering and the police do nothing to get it back, he turns to the mayor, who sends him packing for his outrageous behaviour. Carmine dies in desperation and his burial coincides with the arrival to the city of an important bigwig, for whom the mayor plans to role out the red carpet. But Carmine's ghost has decided to take revenge on the mayor and one night it ruins his coat.
BIOGRAPHY

ALBERTO LATTUADA

In addition to being the founders of the Italian Film Archive, Comencini and Lattuada were two weighty stanchions of early neorrealism. This genre gave Lattuada a whole range of options with wich to express his disquietudes. Not particularly given to traditional comedy, he preferred to use snappy irony, although his personal favourites were literary adaptations such as Il capotto, La lupaLa tempestàLa steppa or Cuore di cane
