AFTER LIFE
Official Section

At a way-station somewhere between Heaven and Earth, the newly-deceased are greeted by guides who will help them sift through their memories to find a defining moment of life. Each of the dead must choose a single memory to be archived on film and then taken along as they pass into heaven.
BIOGRAPHY
Hirokazu's first film, Maborosi (1995), won different awards at the festivals of Venice, Vancouver and Chicago. This director is also known for his documentaries for Japanese TV, in which he turns his penetrating gaze to lives that Japanese society mostly ignores, such as the portrayal of the first Japanese gay man to publicly announce having AIDS. After Life is his second feature.
