June, 1978. The Alcántara family seems to have succeeded in topping the social ladder with its move to one of the poshest parts of the city. While all of Spain has its ears glued to the World Cup in Argentina, Antonio and Mercedes put the final touches to preparations for the First Communion of María, their youngest daughter. Antonio continues to hold his position of Director General at the Ministry of Agriculture, keeping a close eye on the rumours of Government downsizing which could affect his job. Toni Alcántara and Juana have moved to the flat in San Genaro, while Carlos has to decide whether to enrol at university or do his military service.
