Joxean Muñoz

Was Director General of the Tabakalera (International Centre for Contemporary culture) from 2006 until 2010. During that time, Tabakalera functioned as an enormous plateau for filming audiovisual products, a singular space for fiestas and events, a space for film (Film School Meetings, complete screening of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival’s Lab section, or window to FIPA, the Biarritz International Festival of Audiovisual Products). He established strong links with the San Sebastian International Festival and with the city’s Film Unit and the Basque Film Library. Tabakalera also produced and ran exhibitions including Sistiaga (2006), “Summer” (Julian Schnabel, summer 2007), contemporary Latin American art through the Daros Collection “It’s Not Neutral”, 2008), “Tabakalera Soinutan” (2009) and “Buñuel and Un Chien Andalou” (2009).

Prior to this, he had published poems, children’s books, illustrations and articles on visual culture in the specialised and general press. As a scriptwriter, he had written comics, TV programmes, documentaries, advertising pieces and several feature films. He directed a film (Karramarro Uhartea / Crab Island), winner of the Goya Award for Best Animated Feature in 2000, and a short film (Tortolika eta Tronbon), selected for the Kimuak programme in 1999. He has developed cultural projects, primarily having designed and curated exhibitions, particularly Atarian (on the city’s history), Ivan Zulueta, Antton Olariaga, Garbriel Celaya, Joxe Mari Zabala, Isabel Azkarate, John Zabalo “Txiki”, etc.

He sat on the New Directors Jury at San Sebastian Festival in 2003. He was a member of the executive team of Eremuak (international festival of minority languages, Zarautz, 1994, 95 and 96), and sat on the Jury of the San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Festival in 1997.
