Marcel Marx, an author and a well-known Bohemian, has retreated into a voluntary exile in the city of Le Havre, where he feels closer to people by serving them in the honourable, but not too profitable occupation of shoe-shiner. He has buried his dreams of literary success and lives happily within the triangle of his favourite bar, his work, and his wife Arletty. But fate suddenly crosses his footsteps with those of an underage immigrant refugee from Africa. When Arletty falls ill, Marcel has no choice but to draw himself up to his full height anew against the cold wall of human indifference, armed with nothing but his optimism and the unwavering solidarity of the locals from his district.
