The participants, from seven countries, will compete for the Best Project Award at the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, the DALE! Award (Development Latin America - Europe) and the ArteKino International Award.
This year’s edition will be open to professionals with Industry accreditation and will run in hybrid format (the pandemic permitting): on-site on September 20, 21 and 22 at the San Telmo Museum, and on Wednesday 22, when accredited industry guests unable to travel to San Sebastian will have the opportunity to hold online meetings.
The selection for this new edition of the Forum covers a wide variety of subjects: reflections on recent history, movies on coming of age and road trips, projects about the lockdown, proposals astride fiction and non-fiction and one incursion into the field of horror.
For some of the new filmmakers the selection of their projects at the Forum will be their first participation in San Sebastian: the short filmmaker María Zanetti will present Alemania; Martín Kalina, whose short film Los pálidos competed at Locarno, will defend La sucesión, and Nayra Ilic García, Cuerpo Celeste.
Returning to San Sebastian with the projects of their second features are men and women directors who previously participated in the Festival with their first works: Romina Paula (Gente de Noche) , winner of the Horizontes Award in 2019 with De nuevo otra vez / Again Once Again who participated in the Official Selection in 2020 with the anthology film Edición Ilimitada / Unlimited Edition; and Francisco Marise (Camionero), who presented Para la guerra / To War in New Directors in 2018. Furthermore, Agustín Banchero (Las muertes pasajeras) and Inés Barrionuevo (Espectro) will combine the defence of their projects at the Forum with the presentation of their latest films in the Festival’s different competitive sections: Banchero will compete in New Directors with Las vacaciones de Hilda / Hilda’s Short Summer, coming from Films in Progress (today’s WIP Latam), and Barrionuevo will compete for the Golden Shell in the Official Selection with Camila saldrá esta noche / Camila Comes Out Tonight after having competed in New Directors with Julia y el zorro / Julia and the Fox.
Other filmmakers accompanied in their career by the Festival and who will present projects are Joanna Lombardi (Quédate quieto), who participated in the Forum in 2016 with Panza de burro; Juan Andrés Arango (Donde comienza el día), who previously presented La Playa in Films in Progress, a movie premiered in Un Certain Regard at the Festival de Cannes in 2012 and X500 at the Co-Production Forum in 2014, films which were also selected for Horizontes Latinos; Paula Hernández (El viento que arrasa), who competed in Horizontes Latinos 2019 with Los Sonámbulos / The Sleepwalkers, and Álvaro Aponte Centeno (Sarah), who participated in the 2014 Forum with Noli and in Films in Progress with El silencio del viento (2016).
Completing the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum are the first participations in San Sebastian by experienced filmmakers including Johnny Ma (Chin-Gone), whose earlier feature films premiered at Berlin, Toronto and the Cannes' Semaine de la Critique; the acclaimed documentary-maker Cristian Leighton (El porvenir de la mirada) and Laura Casabé (La virgen de la Tosquera) who, after winning the Best Director Award at Sitges Festival with Los que vuelven (2019), will present her latest horror project with a screenplay by Benjamín Naishtat.
In 2021, the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum turns ten. Since its creation in 2012, the Forum has selected 148 projects, 70 of which have already been released and 40 selected for international festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Locarno and San Sebastian.
