There’s no drama without humour
Tuesday, September 20th, 2022

Last year the actor-director Louis Garrel presented La Croisade in the Perlak section and this year he’s now back at the Festival with his latest film, the hilarious tragicomedy L’innocent in which he co-stars with Noémi Merlant, who has accompanied the director to San Sebastián.

Asked why in all his films he uses humour to portray raw emotions, Garrel says that tragicomedy is a genre that allows him to cover the entire range of nuances because there’s no drama without humour, and vice-versa. The audience also relates better to a story if you tell it from a humorous perspective. Apart from that, he also thinks that the tone of a film like L’innocent reflects the way he is.

Noémi Merlant explained that when Garrel sent her the script she immediately agreed to take part in his film. Firstly because she really fancied working among friends, but above all because she had recently been playing some really heavy roles and she needed a part like this one where she could just be herself.
