Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Elsa Fernández-Santos, cultural journalist and film critic at the Spanish newspaper “El País”, brings her vast experience to the jury of the New Directors section at the San Sebastian Film Festival. In this interview, she reflects on the excitement of debating cinema with fellow jurors, valuing diverse perspectives in the process. She shares her preference for arriving at films with an open mind, for the films to speak for themselves. As a juror, she seeks directors who offer a fresh outlook, guiding her to see the world from a new angle. She notes a common theme in this year’s selection, with many coming-of-age stories focusing on pivotal moments in youth. FernándezSantos also highlights the importance of well-crafted supporting characters, often overlooked yet integral to a film’s narrative balance. Beyond her role, she is preparing to release her book “Última sesión”, a tribute to vanished cinemas, through photographs and personal reflections on the collective experience of moviegoing.
