Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival opened in dazzling style, hosted by actresses Silvia Abril, Toni Acosta, and Itziar Ituño. The trio brought humour, courage, and reflection to the evening, shining a light on the ongoing challenges women face in the industry, especially over fifty. The gala featured a heartfelt tribute to Marisa Paredes, whose extraordinary career spanning film, theatre, and TV was celebrated by Cayetana Guillén Cuervo. Her legacy was further honoured with a moving performance of Piensa en mí by singer Izaro Andrés, linked to her iconic role in Tacones lejanos. Walter Salles bagged the FIPRESCI Award for Ainda estou aqui (Still Here), a film praised for its take on memory and resistance. The night also introduced the “Youth, Cinema, Memory, and Democracy” season, reinforcing cinema’s power to defend freedoms. Juliette Binoche, making her directorial debut, urged for an end to the massacres in Palestine and the release of Israeli hostages, calling for peace and change. With 254 films ahead, the Festival promises nine days of discovery, celebration, and reflection on cinema’s role in shaping the world.
