Joachim Trier’s Affeksjonverdi / Sentimental Value heartfeltly unveils the complexities of human connection, starring Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård as a father-daughter duo. She is a successful theatre actress, and he, a once-celebrated filmmaker who has been cast aside by the industry. Desperate for one last masterpiece, he proposes to cast her in a film, a gesture laced with his desire to reconcile after years of estrangement, giving rise to a poignant human drama on emotional isolation and the struggle to express feelings, even for those whose professions demand doing so. Trier’s film proposes a take both on artistic and family legacy, posing challenging questions about the way we convey authentic emotions to our children. With deep personal reflections on his own upbringing, Trier invites viewers to consider the complexities of balancing creative passion with familial duties. Skarsgård’s character epitomises the personal cost of this delicate balance. The film is also a quiet homage to the cinema of the past, capturing its intimate, personal approach to storytelling, while shining light on the universal human need for communication. Ultimately, it talks about the shared fight of speaking different languages but desiring the same thing: connection.
